Bartending can be an incredibly fun job, but there’s a lot more to it than just pouring drinks and passing out beers at an all-week party. A bartender must be many things to their patrons, not just a drink mixer. Here are a few things to consider before jumping into this line of work…
Have You been a Designated Driver?
One of your main jobs as a bartender is to be a referee. You’re the one who tells people when they’ve had enough, you’re the one that tells unruly patrons to take it outdoors if they start raising their voices. It’s your job to call a cab or take someone’s car keys when they’re too drunk to drive, you’re the one that calls the police when things get out of hand, and if someone gets a little sick, you tell them where the restroom is so they can throw up. You don’t just serve drinks, you also handle the situation when someone’s had a little too much.
Can You Drink Responsibly?
Typically, you do not drink on the job (but maybe you have one or two while cleaning up for the night), but, now and then, you may be asked to take a shot with a table. So, when you drink, can you take one shot and then go back to what you were doing? Or do tend to drink, and drink, and drink when you drink? You don’t make money by drinking up your inventory, and you don’t keep a job that way, either. Few bars expect you to NEVER drink, but all of them want a responsible, mature bartender.
Ever Worked the Line?
You ever watch one of those cooking shows like Top Chef? These shows usually bring together a bunch of culinary academy students who really know how to put great meals together, but… Since all their experience is academic, they fall apart under the pressure of the line. Mixing drinks for friends is one thing, but a little fast food experience is what you need to be able to pour drinks quickly, and correctly, when you’ve got a line of twenty people all waiting for their cocktails. Try getting a job at a burger joint for a month for training. If you can’t handle it, you won’t be able to handle bartending, either.
